Description
Judging by the number of people taking photos of the lion statues at each end of the Chain Bridge in Budapest, Hungary, the lions are nearly as popular as the bridge itself! Two stone lion statues guard both bridgeheads, making 4 in all. They were carved in stone by the sculptor, Janos Marschalko. They are visibly similar in design to the famous bronze lions of Trafalgar Square but they were earlier. They are also smaller (and appear from below to lack tongues). According to the story, the sculptor, forgot to carve out the lions' tongues. A boy made a remark about it at the opening ceremony. The sculptor became so distressed that he jumped off the bridge into the Danube. In reality the lions do have tongues (they're just not visible from below, only from above) and the sculptor lived on for several more decades. The bridge piers and the lion statues luckily survived the destruction of the Chain Bridge in 1945, as the Nazis blew up all the bridges in Budapest during their retreat from the Soviet forces.
