Description
As you can see, it was 1:10 pm. It was also a blazing hot Texas summer day in Gatesville TX, the county seat of Coryell County and home to the Coryell County Courthouse. You can feel the blazing heat on the nearly cloudless day, unbroken by any large trees. What counts for a 'large' tree in dry Texas country is seen on the lawn of the courthouse. If you zoom in, you can see the date 1897 inscribed on the red scrollwork above the columns. What is always amazing to me it the elaborate architecture of these historical county courthouses, built at a time when most residents would have lived in homes far more modest! The historical marker reads: An outstanding example of Second Empire Victorian style, often seen in Texas Courthouse design. Erected in 1897 on land donated by early settler R. G. Grant....Limestone and red sandstone blocks were precut to the exact size at quarry, then hauled here by horse-drawn wagons. At each entrance are columns in Roman Corinthian style; and over the east entrance is builder's mark of an owl. Statues on the roof represent "Justice." Noted trials have been held in this building.
