This painting shows four Founding Fathers of the United States. These men are part of the most prominent statesmen of the American Revolutionary generation. They are responsible for the successful war for colonial independence from Great Britain and the liberal ideas in the Declaration of Independence, and the republican form of government defined n the United States constitution.
George Washington was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was unanimously chosen by electors as the the first President of the United States for two terms in 1788 and 1792. In 1787 Washington presided over the convention that drafted the United States Constitution. He was the first to be called the Father of His Country.
Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the of the Declaration of Independence. He was the third president of the United States. At the beginning of the American Revolution he served in the Continental Congress. He was the first Secretary of State under President George Washington. While president he oversaw the acquisition of the the Louisiana Territory in 1803.
John Adams (lower center) was a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congress. He was the first Vice President of the United States and the second President of the United Sates. In 1783, after the Revolutionary War, John Adams helped write the peace treaty with England. It was called the Treaty of Paris. HIs son was John Quincy Adams, sixth present of the United States.
Benjamin Franklin (right) Franklin helped write the Constitution of the United States. During the American Revolution, he convinced the French to help the Americans. Franklin told the French that if the British won the war they would be too powerful. He signed Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Treaty of Alliance with France, and the Treaty of Paris, 1783.
