Description
Steuben in uniform with his sword and military badges. In the background is a tranquil American river which was pictured in a portrait painted in 1792. On the left above he is shown talking on a personal level to continental soldiers. His help began at Valley Forge.
Baron Von Steuben was considered one of Fathers of the Continental army. Von Steuben (1730 to 1794) served as a military officer in Prussia and came to America to help the colonists win the Revolutionary war. He was recommended by Ben Franklin who at the time was in France. Steuben became Inspector General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He taught the essentials of military drills, tactics and disciplines on a personal level to the rag-tag Continental soldiers.
Though he spoke no english, his Blue Book of Military basics was translated by Alexander Hamilton and Nathaniel Green (American military man). George Washington let it be known that Steuben was responsible for significant improvement in the performance of his troops. Von Steubens Blue Book was used up to the War of 1812.
Von Steuben died in New York and is buried in the Steuben Memorial State Historic site.
