Description
Saint Cecelia is the patron saint of music, especially church music. She is also the patron saint of musicians, composers, instrument makers and poets. Some accounts say that Cecilia was blind and she is also the saint of the blind. Another account says that her name means “lily of heaven.” Her obscure story has grown to be a legend.
It is believed that St. Cecelia was born in the 2nd century. She was the daughter of a wealthy Roman. The day she was married she sang in her heart to God alone. She told her husband that she had for her love an angel of God. Her husband saw the angel too and was converted.
She was condemned for refusing to worship gods. Because of this a soldier was ordered to behead her but he bungled the job. Cecelia lay dying for three days; during that time she bequeathed her property to the church.
This painting is made by looking at an old painting of Cecilia with her violin.
