Description
Frances Scott Key wrote the lyrics to The Stars Spangled Banner, His lyrics were first and still are sung to a popular tune from the early 1800s.
Frances Scott Key was born an American in 1779. He became an author and a lawyer.
This is why he wrote the lyrics to the song which is now our national anthem:
During the War of 1812, Frances Scott Key was trying to negotiate a prisoner exchange aboard a British ship. That night he was not allowed to return to his own American ship and he watched the British bombarding American forces at Fort McHenry.
At dawn, Key was able to see an American flag still waving on the shore of Fort McHenry. The next day on his way back to Baltimore he was inspired to write a poem about his experience. The poem was published and sung to a familiar tune of the day. It became known as The Star Spangled Banner.
In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed an Executive Order naming The Star Spangled Banner as America s National Anthem.
